Scores of men stand to lose their little blue pills after a decision by CVS Health Corp., to drop Pfizer’s Viagra from its coverage list beginning next year.
What a
letdown.
Scores of men stand to lose
their little blue pills, after a decision by CVS Health Corp., which determines
which drugs some insurers cover, to drop Pfizer’s Viagra from its coverage list
beginning next year.
Affected men looking for an
edge in the bedroom will have to turn to Eli Lilly & Co.’s little yellow
pills, Cialis, instead.
CVS did not respond to requests
for comment about why they gave Viagra the boot. Pharmacy benefit managers like
CVS sometimes negotiate with drug makers to get deep discounts by agreeing to
shut out competitors.
Eli Lilly spokesman Scott
MacGregor would not comment on any deal with CVS, but said Cialis has helped
many suffering from erectile dysfunction since its launch in 2003.
“Millions of men worldwide
trust Cialis to treat their ED,” MacGregor said.
A spokesman for Pfizer declined to comment on how the change —
first reported by Bloomberg — might affect men’s
abilities to have happy and healthy sex lives.
“Pfizer is committed to
ensuring patient access to our medicines,” the spokesman said. “Viagra
continues to be available to millions of patients in the marketplace.”
Men will still be able to pick
up Viagra from CVS drugstores if their insurance covers it.
CVS
Health Corp.’s biggest competitor, Express Scripts Holding Co., will continue
to cover both Viagra and Cialis
